One student has been killed and three others are in hospital following a mass shooting at a US high school in the US state of Washington.

The gunman, who has yet to be identified, opened fire in Freeman High School in Rockford on Wednesday morning.

Brian Schaeffer of the Spokane Fire Department confirmed to reporters that one person died and three other injured victims were taken to hospital and remain in a stable condition.

Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich told The Spokesman-Review newspaper that the shooter was in custody and described how events unfolded.

He said the shooter pulled out a gun and it jammed. The shooter then grabbed another gun and was confronted by a student. This student sadly lost their life.

One pupil named Christina posted an image of children sheltering in a nearby primary school after they were evacuated from the scene.

Local news channel KXLY interviewed a student who claimed to be a friend of the shooter.

“He said that he was going to do something stupid that might get him killed or in jail. He was carrying a duffel bag. I think the color was black. He pulled it out and just started shooting.”

Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement after the shooting: “This morning’s shooting at Freeman High School is heartbreaking. All Washingtonians are thinking of the victims and their families, and are grateful for the service of school staff and first responders working to keep our students safe.”
